"Cohen William Beckman was born January 5th
2007. He was diagnosed with HLHS at my 20
week ultrasound. My regular OBGYN sent us to
a high risk doctor in Pittsburgh, who turned
out to be the most wonderful doctor I could
have asked for. Cohen is our first and only
child.
After we found out about the HLHS, my
pregnancy was rough to say the least. I was
put on bed rest at 28 weeks due to my
deteriorating placenta. My doctor said it was
the worst he had ever seen and told me to be
ready to deliver at any time. As all of you
know, a early HLHS baby is not the best thing.
So I was given a shot of steroids to help
develop his lungs. Well, Cohen had a different
agenda. As my placenta kept getting worse,
my little man continued to grow. I had weekly
ultrasounds to measure him and he just kept
getting bigger. The doctor could not
understand nor could he explain how this was
possible.
So, being told I would deliver shortly after 28
weeks, my little miracle made it to 38 weeks
to everyone's surprise! Weighing in at 6 lbs 7
1/2 oz.! He had his Norwood on January 9th
(4 days old) and was home on Jan 19th. His
Glenn was on Friday April 13th. Yes...Friday
the 13th!!! And he was home on Monday April
16th!! 3 days after surgery! We couldn't have
gotten through any of it without God and the
wonderful Dr. Morelle and staff at Children's
Hospital Pittsburgh.
Cohen is a complete joy to be around and is
the best thing that has happened to my
husband and myself."
